*Blows off the dust from an old subject.*

Yeah, well, sorry to start anew this old topic, but I saw some points I just couldn't ignore.

1-Clerics are awesome. In the last 4 sessions, I fell in love with my cleric, I won't ever say anything bad about any of them(I might still blame the player for poor spell selection, but never the class)

2-Clerics, with a couple of buffs added, can do both the tanking and and the melee damage of a fighter. Of course, a buffed fighter will still out-damage a cleric, but he won't be buffed if the said cleric is only healing.

3-Even if you don't count the "cure" spells(including healing), the quality of restoration(break enchantment, regenerate, restoration, neutralize poison) is hard to get with potions and wands.

4-Finally, my last point. You were waiting for that, weren't you? Anyway. Damage. I'm currently trying to break the 240 damage cap with my cleric. Sure, fireball would've been nice, but my point is: Clerics can deal with pretty much anything an adventure can throw at it and deal with it. Cleric is the middle ground with extras. Sure, that means anyone can do that stuff, but even better, but it also means that if your wizard is down, the cleric can do that job, if the fighter is away, the cleric can do that job. Heck, with find traps, he can even do the rogue's job.

More races ad classes will be coming in the next volume of the Players Handbook. If you notice te cover of the new PHB is says for Martial, Divine, and Arcane classes - the three power sources used by the classes. They mention new power sources to come - nature, shadow, psychic, and ki. You can make some assumptions as to what classs may fit those power sources. No clue for sure about new races though.

After reviewing the new rules, the simplification of the game will make the combat much simpler and allow better team cohesion. Everyone can heal, not just the cleric. less skills and abilities to keep track of. It gives every class a balanced experienced that makes players feel that they're an important part of the team. The math is much simpler too, so new players won't get bored.
The only thing I don't like is that they got rid of half-orc :( but They added other really cool races so I don't mind that much.

Interesting. I've never played the Marshal but it's peeked my curiosity on several occasions. Looking at the new warlord I have to say I really like it. Its hard to say what my first 4E character will be but the warlord is fighting for a shot at it :)

As a player in RPGA's Living Greyhawk who primes a marshal... let me tell you that it isn't the class for everyone. I sacked all my stats down to start with the 18 charisma and it was worth it all the way. I intend to do the same with the warlord class. Sometimes I have won the day and never rolled a die, the enhancement of others, granting move actions, buffing initiative... it breaks things. Hard. When the entire team goes first, usually nothing is left but a smear. The Warlord tones this down a bit with a flat +2 init modifier, instead of one scaled by a stat (a good call). I'm looking forward to playing one in 4e :) Team play is the way to rock, an enhancer lets everyone have more fun. I don't know how 5 warlords would play, but we're going to playtest that one soon.

Danny, I think you're confusing classes and skills. Also, there are many other rules out there for alignment (go read DMG2 from 3.5 for example, it still applies) so draw on them.

Also... You're looking at this as LAWFUL classes who follow a code of conduct.
 Paladin = good.
 Knight = neutral.
 Blackguard/etc = evil.
There are even rules out there for making paladins for other alignments.

You know what, this is getting too long. GOOD ARTICLE. You've highlighted one of the core problems of moving 4e into such accessible hands; balance at the cost of development.

yeah, that could be used and abused, a party of these things together constantly giving each other free attacks. but i think this system is going for the 'balanced' party, in theory with 4th, there is one character of every class with no overlap. so it shouldn't be an issue but i dunno, the balance idea is crap too. meh
