About the Rust Monster Crew
Here at Rust Monster we’re geeks and gamers like you, talking about the same stuff you’re talking about. We’re into everything from RPGs, console gaming, PC gaming, miniatures; hell we crack open the board games and card games too! We buy the books, read the stories, and play the games - then we come here to talk about it. Was it good, did it suck, what do we wish they would have done? It’s open season on all things geek here at Rust Monster - the place for Player vs. Player discussion.
Meet the Rust Monster Crew
Darryl (Damionte)
It’s been 20 years now for me and D&D. From hiding the old red set from my sometimes religious parents to 20 years later posting articles here at Rust Monster. Along the way my gaming tastes have expanded. I’m one of our resident Superhero buffs, so love CHAMPIONS, and City Of Heroes. I drew mana with Magic the Gathering and was a Pokemon Master. “Yes I caught them all!” I hate the white wolf gaming system so don’t talk to me about Werewolf/Vampire. I loved the story hated the game system. I’m also into MMORPG’s and Sports Games. As well as flight/space sims. Most of my current play time is spent in Aces High II blowing noobs from the sky, Getting in some Madden, or NBA Live or sniping fools on HALO! … and downloading porn! If there was a Jeopardy episode for porn trivia I would be the grand master! Other than that I’m a pretty standard type of geek. :)
Dave (Tryke)
After Kaz, I’m the resident old timer of D&D, playing this crazy game since 1979 when I crawled into the Basic D&D book and created an elf. Yes, I created an elf. Elf was the class, the race, the whole kaboodle. That elf, Landon, went on to open up a can of whoop ass on the Keep on the Borderlands and stayed with me till he retired in 1996. In the interim, I’ve been an army officer, a dad three times, a computer engineer in my serious times, and a warhammer general at heart. You’ll find me and my buddies hanging out playing munchkin, trying out some new tabletop strategy game, or throwing down at warhammer. I also like to do martial arts, draw, and write articles, short stories, and numerous as of yet unfinished novels.
John (Kazz)
“Biography by Damionte” John is the old man rivers of the Rust Monster crew. When he started playing D&D it only had one “D”. That was before the merger. John is a great player to have at your table. Only fault being that he sometimes lives in the past. His brain swims with memories of the games of yore, (as well as left over residue from the 60’s) so when his turn comes he’s sitting there trying to figure out his THACO instead of just rolling his dang D20 so his turns take forever! He also swears Dwarves can only go up to like lvl 10, & all elves are gestalt Fighter/Wizards who cap at lvl 15. Great guy to have at the table just don’t debate the game rules with him. :)
Mike (Poor Knight)
In the world of geeks and gamers I’m a late bloomer. I didn’t start any serious gaming until right after high school - I mean I played games but I never enjoyed them, or was allowed to enjoy them, like I do now. My preferred games are D&D and Warhammer Fantasy. But I love to get into it with games like Axis and Allies, Risk - strategy and tactics games are my ‘faves’. And a gamers counterpart - technology - is my other hobby. Web development was something I did for fun long before I made it a career.
Michael (Haselmaus)
My first introduction to D&D was when my brother & I got the basic set. We didn’t really play until we picked up the first AD&D rules. The first real character I played was a halfling thief (which at this point shouldn’t surprise anyone in this group). Since then I’ve played various rpgs such as gamma world, boot hill, shadowrun & a few others. My first computer based rpg was good old Bard’s Tale.. on the Commodore-64 computer. And the fun has never stopped since. I love computer gaming (I can often be found on counter-strike), especially rpgs like Baldur’s gate & Diablo & MMORPGs like FFXI, Asheron’s Call & City of Heroes, and have probably replaced most of the components in various PCs trying to keep them reasonably up to date. But nothing on the computer has quite been able to replace pnp AD&D. Call it nostalgia or whatever you like, but there’s just something about the game that keeps me coming back.
Richard (BusDriver)
I like long romantic walks on the beach, candle lit dinners and…oh…wrong web site…so I am probably the least experienced player here, only about 14 years or so. I came in with AD&D 2nd Edition and have been rolling up characters ever since. Like most of the rest of the group, I play MMORPGs, board games, card games and am into technology, building computers and more power! In short…a geek, oh well, we are what we are and without us…Y2K would have killed you all!
Shawn (Mythknight)
(Bio by Damionte) Mythknight has been a hardcore gamer for as long as I’ve known him. That’s 18+ years now. Mythknight’s passion is Shadowrun, and Fantasy MMORPG’s. He dragged me kicking & screaming into the magical world of MMORPG’s back with DIABLO and then Dark Age Of Camelot. Since then he’s hacked his way through just about every big MMORPG. He’s currently one of the mindless horde inhabiting World of Warcraft. He even married a gamer girl. They hack away at the verse together each evening.
Tom (geektom)
(another bio by Damionte) Geektom is currently in Semi-Retirement as he takes a break from gaming to get caught up on his real life. He has been known to appear suddenly from the mists of time to storm local Warhammer tournaments though. The break seems to have done wonders for his Warhammer win/loss ratio as his wins have steadily increased. As a role player I have to admit that tom is the RM crews strongest story teller. Known for his rich characterizations on both sides of the GM screen. In typical yin/yang style though he seems to have very little comprehension of how the game mechanics work. Tom kicks it old school like that! The rule book is a crutch for the weak minded!
